The Sport of Curling

Chess on Ice — Strategy, Precision & Community

Curling is a team sport played on ice where players slide 42-pound granite stones toward a target (the “house”) while teammates sweep the ice to control speed and direction. Often called “chess on ice,” curling combines strategic thinking, precision delivery, and teamwork in a uniquely social atmosphere. Originating in 16th-century Scotland, curling is now an Olympic sport enjoyed by millions worldwide — and it’s coming to Fire ’n’ Ice Sports Arena.

🥌 How It Works

Two teams of four players alternate delivering stones down a 150-foot sheet of ice toward concentric rings (the “house”). The team with the stone closest to the center (“button”) scores points each end. A standard game consists of 8 or 10 ends, lasting approximately 2 hours.

🎯 Team Positions

  • Lead — Delivers first two stones, primary sweeper
  • Second — Delivers stones 3 & 4, sweeps for Lead
  • Third (Vice-Skip) — Delivers stones 5 & 6, holds broom for Skip
  • Skip — Team strategist, calls shots, delivers final two stones

🌟 Why Curling?

  • Low-impact — accessible to all fitness levels and ages
  • Strategic depth — mental engagement every shot
  • Social sport — team-based with strong community bonds
  • Lifelong activity — competitive players from age 8 to 80+
  • 2,000–4,000 steps per game for active health benefits
  • Olympic sport — pathway from local to international competition
