Rules & Expectations

Figure Skating Program Policies

All skaters, parents, and coaches are expected to follow these policies to maintain a safe, professional, and productive training environment.

📋 Registration and Check-In Policies

  • Advance Booking: All skaters must register and prepay online for sessions, including freestyle, specialty, and off-ice classes.
  • Drop-ins are only permitted on a case-by-case basis.
  • Registration Deadlines: Registration should close automatically when the session starts or when capacity is reached.
  • Proof of Registration: Skaters must be registered to take the ice; failure to do so may result in disciplinary action or loss of privileges.
  • Skaters should be prepared to show proof of registration if requested.
  • Check-In Procedure: Implement a formal check-in process, such as using an iPad at a front desk or checking in directly with a coach on the ice if administrative staff is unavailable.

⚠️ On-Ice Etiquette and Safety

  • Right of Way: The skater performing their program to their music (identified by wearing a colored belt) has the absolute right of way.
  • Traffic Flow: When entering or exiting the ice, skaters should skate around the perimeter of the boards rather than crossing through the middle.
  • Safe Areas: Stopping in the middle of the ice or leaning against the boards to talk is dangerous; skaters should leave the ice if they need to socialize.
  • Electronic Use: Personal headsets or earbuds are prohibited for skaters on freestyle sessions to ensure they can hear others.
  • Ice Resurfacing: For safety, no one is permitted on the ice while the Zamboni is running. Doors must be fully closed before skaters enter.

💪 Participant Code of Conduct

  • Work Ethic: Socializing and horseplay are not tolerated. Skaters are expected to stay focused.
  • Sportsmanship: Profanity, kicking the ice, and temper tantrums are grounds for immediate dismissal from a session.
  • Cleanliness: Skaters are responsible for removing all personal items (tissues, water bottles, sweaters) from the rink boards after their session.
  • Prohibited Substances: Use or possession of illegal drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products (including e-cigarettes) is strictly prohibited.

👗 Mandatory Dress Code

Establishing a professional appearance is key for figure skating programs:

  • Attire: Proper skating or exercise attire is mandatory. Jeans and shorts are not permitted.
  • Grooming: Long hair must be secured in a ponytail or bun, and skate laces should be tucked in.

👪 Parent and Spectator Expectations

  • No "Sideline Coaching": Parents and spectators are strictly prohibited from instructing skaters from the bleachers or lobby, as this is hazardous and distracting.
  • Positive Environment: All participants must maintain a supportive attitude. Negative or hurtful comments about other skaters, coaches, or parents will not be tolerated.
  • Restricted Access: Parents and skaters are not permitted in the coaches' locker room at any time.

🛡️ Safety and Misconduct (SkateSafe)

Fire and Ice Arena and SSS Academies align with the U.S. Figure Skating SkateSafe Program, which maintains a zero-tolerance policy for:

  • Physical, sexual, or emotional misconduct
  • Bullying, threats, harassment, or hazing
  • Willfully tolerating any of the above behaviors

All of our figure skating instructors are SkateSafe certified. Any concerns regarding safety or misconduct should be reported immediately to the Skating Director or arena management.
